EC (VO) 1935/2004 dictates that materials with food contact must be produced in accordance with Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP) so that during normal/predictable use they do not transfer their constituents to foods in quantities that could:

• endanger human health
•  unacceptably change the composition of food, or
• cause the food’s smell, taste or appearance to deteriorate.   

Based on our supplier’s declarations, we can confirm no heavy metals such as cadmium, lead, mercury and chromium VI, or chlorinated solvents, are used in the manufacturing of our products, or of raw materials such as paper and cardboard, or of consumables such as inks, varnishes and adhesives.  

As a raw material, paper may contain traces of these heavy metals as they occur naturally in wood (cellulose), but at levels well below the 100 ppm legal limit (Directive 94/62/EC).  

To test whether packaging and displays contain any substances affecting food safety, an external accredited testing institute can be commissioned to perform compliance testing. During this process, any interaction between the different packaging materials and the effect this has on the end product is also examined. To issue a food-grade compliance certificate the entire process chain must be analysed, including the food product.  

We are working closely with our suppliers in anticipation of the revisions to German legislation on printing inks and mineral oil.

Under REACH regulations, STI Group is classified as a ‘downstream user’. The packaging and displays we manufacture are therefore not required to be REACH registered.
