Digital Link forms the basis of the Digital Product Pass

With the DPP, the EU is addressing one of the key projects of the Green Deal. From 2030, products will have to carry comprehensive digital information on their origin, materials, reparability and recyclability — a key driver of the circular economy.

By scanning a code on the packaging with their smartphone, consumers can access information such as the manufacturer and origin, materials used, product properties and composition, recyclability and environmental impact.

Packaging becomes a smart communication tool

Packaging plays a key role in this. After all, it is often the first thing consumers see, and in future it will also be the gateway to transparent product information. A QR code or other intelligent tagging system will turn packaging into a digital interface between manufacturers, retailers, consumer and recyclers.

This is where info.link's solution comes into play. The platform makes packaging 'smart' without the need for an app. Each item is given a digital identity that can be accessed via a QR code. Companies can use this to provide legally required DPP data, link to further product information and integrate additional services, gamification or feedback functions.

When a dynamic, multifunctional code is applied to packaging, the underlying data can easily be updated and tailored according to users, location, language, time, and other parameters. The scannable 2D code on the packaging connects the GS1 Digital Link and the digital product passt. Part of the information that previously had to be printed directly on the packaging can now be stored and personalised precisely using the dynamic, multifunctional code. Consumers can scan the link without a special app. If the information changes, there is no need to produce new packaging, as the digitally stored data can be adapted dynamically.
