Packaging made from mushrooms

2022-10-11 –

Our Circular Innovation team doesn’t just follow well-travelled paths; it isn’t afraid to explore new technologies. Although not yet commercially scalable, mushroom packaging has potential.

A first prototype packaging has been developed the new solar-powered remote control by Universal Electronics (UEI).

The remote is held secure not by plastic but by mushrooms. These actively grow around hemp chips inside moulds to form the desired tray shape. Once dried, the plant-based tray is water and flame resistant, recyclable along with waste paper and even home compostable.

Covering the tray is a Paperwise slipcase, created using paper made from agricultural waste fibres.
