A shining example

OSRAM focuses on environmentally friendly packaging for its energy-saving light bulbs and won the red dot design award for its graphic design. After designing the OSRAM packaging, Jürgen Hofmann, Product Developer at the STI Group, adapted the implementation to the individual types of light bulb with the support of the most advanced CAD technology and created a range of cushion packaging where the window is made to fit the shape of the bulb.

Eco-Blister preserve the environment

This makes the new OSRAM packaging not only environmentally friendly but is also intended to help with the purchase decision. On the basis of the new contour packaging, an appealing design was developed by the Lothar Böhm Agency in Hamburg.

Through opening the underside of the packaging, the consumer can see the base and test the bulb on a device installed in store, without having to open the packaging. This benefits both the retail trade and the environment “Because the shape is adapted to the size of the bulb, the retailer can display up to 35% more bulbs on the same area. There is also the possibility of displaying the packaging standing or hanging,” explains Christian Michel, Packaging Engineer at OSRAM. In addition, with the new innovative shape there are also lower volumes of waste in comparison to the previous plastic blister packaging.

The jury of the red dot design awards were impressed by the new packaging and they awarded it the prize in the category of Communication Design – Packaging Design.

Packaging follows product: perfect formed packaging increases shelf efficiency - +35% more products on the same shelf space The lamp can be tested directly in store without opening the packaging through the open underside of the packaging. The retailer is also happy. The shape which is adapted to the size of the bulb enables the retailer to display up to 35% more bulbs on the same area.
