BAM-Tested Dangerous Goods Packaging
Corrugated cardboard serves as effective transport protection for dangerous goods.
STI Corrugated GmbH has been certified by the German Federal Institute for Materials Research and Testing (BAM) in Berlin as a manufacturer of packaging for dangerous goods. Since receiving that endorsement, the company has been an active player in development and release process preparations for the packaging of dangerous goods, a key factor in speeding up the approval process.
Special requirements apply to the packaging of dangerous goods. They must be especially robust so as to minimise the risk to the environment and to humans in the event of a traffic accident or other unexpected incident. Depending on the nature of the hazardous material, the packaging units are assigned one of three packaging classes.
Among other factors, the classes are based on the defined minimum heights from which the packaging must survive a fall when packaged with dangerous goods. The testing is performed on the object in its entirety – that is, the hazardous material, primary packaging, transport packaging, padding material and closure materials are tested for their performance as a single unit.
There are currently nine classes of dangerous goods. Corrugated cardboard must go through rigorous testing by a recognised external testing institute before it can be used for the transport of dangerous goods. Testing conducted in the STI Group's own lab can be used to make exact preparations for the development and release process for dangerous goods packaging. This in turn significantly speeds up the approval process with the BAM (German Federal Agency for Material Research and Testing).
